Thanks for the help JapanTravel! Just got back - Trip Report
Thanks for all the help, JapanTravel! My trip was fantastic and thanks to all the resources here my group was able to do most everything we wanted to get done! This post is basically a book, but I really enjoyed reading through posts with detailed trip reports. A few things before we begin.
None of us had been to Japan before.
None of us spoke any Japanese. Sorry if I mangle any words.
This was not a budget trip, so it is totally possible to do this cheaper.
Here’s my trip report.
Rough Schedule
Tokyo 3 nights. Izu 1 night (Stop in Aichi on way to Kyoto). Kyoto 3 nights (day trip to Hiroshima, Miyajima). One last night in Tokyo.
Tokyo
We used our jet lag and got an early start exploring. We did the Imperial Palace east garden, a few shrines in Ueno Park, @Home Maid Café in Akihabara, and some shopping in Ikebukuro all on day one. The Ghibli museum was closed so I hit a couple of the Donburi Republic stores for souvenirs. The one in Ikebukuro is very small. Skytree was much better, so thank you guys for that tip. Visiting the Museum would have been ideal, but it just wasn’t in the cards this trip.
I had really low expectations for the maid café since everyone said the women were sort of dead eyed. It was a lot more fun than I thought, really similar to a casino or strip club. No windows, hard to tell the time, no touching/pictures of the girls etc. They were all very friendly though and the whole thing had a positive energy. I don’t know if I would go again, but it was a fun story.
Ueno Park was pretty and had great temples. It was also so crowded! Not unmanageable but still more than I expected for a park. My only major park comparison was Central Park in NYC, which seemed less crowded.
Speaking of temples, one thing I would highly recommend is for anyone planning on hitting a few temples/shrines is to get a goshuincho at the first shrine/temple you stop at. I only found out about this through a friend and really enjoyed collecting stamps at all the shrines. A goshuincho is the book you collect goshuin (shrine stamps) in. Each shrine has a unique stamp and a stamp is only about 300 yen. You just pray and then go to the stamp office (typically where they are selling all the good luck charms) and ask. I would just say “Goshuin?” and hold out my book and people kindly accommodated. Friends of mine who had traveled to Japan before talked about getting sick of shrines, but I think collecting stamps at each place motivated me a lot.
Day 2 in Tokyo was seeing some of the Sanja Matsuri and going to see Sumo. The festival was /packed/ but it was cool seeing all the food stalls out. Definitely helpful to have a coin purse for something like this, since it was mostly cash and change was all coins.
I liked Sumo waaay more than I thought I would. The English radio broadcast helped a lot, plus they had English speaking guides at the front of the stadium to help direct tourists. I ordered through the buy sumo tickets site and they came through even though the tickets sold out in record time. Also the bento at the stadium were sold out by the time we got there; however, the ice cream and the sumo manju were so so good. Maybe my favorite snacks of the trip.
Overall, Tokyo was a good time. Definitely a very well dressed city. People here always had their shoulders, chest, and legs covered. I was worried about exposing too much skin and I definitely saw some old men leering when I wore a tank top, even with a sweater. That said people were very patient with us and our ignorance. Super considerate all the time.
It seems like very few things in Tokyo (and basically everywhere else I went) were open before 10am other than konbini. Some restaurants opened around 8:30-9am. Shrines would open the grounds earlier, but the offices didn’t open until 8-9ish. I used my jet lag to go to shrines early and walk around, but sometimes I would have to sit and wait for the shuin office to open. Still worth it to beat all the school children who started appearing at every landmark around 9am. Not sure if I was just there during a popular time for field trips, but every major landmark I was at had a small flood of school children (Kiyomizu Dera, Hiroshima Peace Museum, Fushimi Inari etc).
A note on rail passes. If you know what time you want, make reservations for your seats ahead of time. You can get on a shinkansen in an unreserved car; however, you may have to stand for 15-20m if the train is full. You can reserve all your trains before you activate your pass, which I didn’t know until later.
Also Hyperdia was good for bullet/express trains, but didn’t seem to really be accurate about local trains at all. It didn’t even list taking a local train as an option in places like Izu or Aichi so we just used google maps/ rail schedules posted at the station.
Izu
I wish we were able to spend more time here because the temple looked fun, but we had a tight travel schedule to and from. It was awkward getting around since we relied on taxi and here away from major international tourist locations, there was much less English. There were taxis at the station, but we didn’t know if there would be at the temple and didn’t want to get trapped. So we went straight to Yagyu-No-Sho.
I was told ryokan were focused on hospitality and people were not exaggerating. It felt very much like its own little private world. The onsen was excellent and very empty (probably because most of rooms had private baths). My brother’s tattoos were no issue. I emailed with them before we booked to ask; it was fine as long as they were “small, fashionable tattoos” that could be covered. The proprietor and owner both spoke English. Our room attendant did not, but they gave her note cards with English to read from.
Every small detail at this place was covered. They not only had the yukata for us, but also nice PJs, hair brushes, toothbrushes, sewing kit, English newspaper, etc. We arrived around 4, had time to bathe and then started our meal.
The meal was an experience. Dinner took 2.5 hours. I wasn’t sure how to even eat some of the dishes, but we did our best. I don’t have a very expert palette but each dish was a lot of fun. Either we liked eating it or we liked figuring out how to eat it. The room attendant disappeared after serving and then just appeared once we had finished with our course. In total, including drinks, it was about 15 courses for dinner. Breakfast took about an hour as well, it was another 10 or so dishes broken into 3 courses. We left right after breakfast for Takahama, Aichi.
Aichi
One of my friends lives in rural Aichi. We met up with him in Nagoya and then traveled back to his place in Takahama. The ride there was pretty, we saw Mt Fuji for a bit from the train. Also lots of views of rice paddies and farming. The train station sold some killer mochi. Not sure why they only sell mochi with red bean in the US, they totally also had strawberry, chocolate, custard etc as filler in Japan.
I actually really liked getting away from the cities. It’s similar in some ways to the US. The excitement in town was a new Starbucks and Costco. We went to a grocery store and did some shopping. I learned Japan sells Whiskey in sizes up to 4 liter!
Kyoto
Day 1 in Kyoto for me was basically just shrines. I think I hit 4 shrines in one morning, starting in Kiyomizu Dera and basically working my way through the Inside Kyoto Itinerary until lunch. Then I walked back to the apartment. Kiyomizu Dera was under construction which was a little disappointing, but the parts that I could see were beautiful. Good view of the city as well.
I also did Fushimi Inari the morning after we got back from Hiroshima. I really wish I had more than 2 hours here, since the trek up the mountain was great. That said, definitely get here early. I arrived at 7:30am on a Wednesday and there were only a few photographers. By 9:30am when I was leaving, there was a line literally 5 people across and 15 deep waiting to get some pictures of the gates. It was so bad, no one was even queued properly which was the first time I had seen that in Japan since the airport.
We stayed in K’s Villa Takasegawa-tei. It was really nice, good location. They had towels, tooth brushes, gendered amenity kits. Had a washing machine (hidden on the 2nd floor rear balcony) and was right near a foreigner bar (Gojo Paradiso) if you want to find someone to speak English with. We also had some good curry at Asipai/Hibi Coffee.
Hiroshima/Miyajima
I had a lot of concern about this day trip since many people were saying it was not enough time. It probably wouldn’t have been to see all these places had to offer; however, we really only wanted to see the Peace Museum and the Shrine. I had us catching the 7:20 train out of Kyoto and getting back around 9-10pm. We actually got back around 6pm! One of my travel buddies got sick after we saw the shrine in Miyajima so we skipped the Mt. Misen hike and headed back.
The Hiroshima Peace Park and museum were great. One of the roving packs of school children was there presenting their cranes to the children’s memorial and starting singing to the monument which was touching. We bought paper at the museum and left our own cranes as well.
The museum is half closed for construction, so we only saw the east building. It was moving; however, I wish the main building had been open since the displays they were able to bring over were incredible. I think the main building must have more of the testimonies since the east building was mostly explanations of the destruction and the past and present of nuclear weapons.
Important to note! The rail system here is different and didn’t take my Suica or my friend’s Pasmo. This was really only an issue between Hiroshima station and the park and back. The rest of the way, we just used the rail pass. We took the ferry over around lunch time.
Miyajima was nice, but also really touristy. Like a long line of shops for tourists and then the shrine/mountain. The shrine was gorgeous though and since it was low tide we could walk right up to the torii gate, where people were placing coins in the base. I do wish we had been able to go up the mountain, but my friend started getting sick so we decided to head back and rest. I will say Miyajima had the most beautiful goshuincho of all the shrines I saw.
Other notes
We used the pocket wifi from Japan Experience since it was bundled with our rail pass. It worked out super well. We always had signal, as long as we charged it each night.
100 yen coins are super useful. I treasured them.
Kobe beef was still expensive in Kyoto.
tl:dr thanks for the help! A+ trip. Got a lot of value out of my suica and goshuincho.
